Frequently Asked Questions

How strong is Horse Hair Jewellery?
Actually Horse Hair is extremely tough! It can be worn all the time, as long as there is no abrasion on the hair. However, it can be colour affected so avoid hair dyes, bleaches and harsh chemicals. It can get wet but I would advise removing it for safety if swimming in the ocean etc, and chlorine pools which can dry the hair shafts. For more details go to the Horse hair Braided Jewellery information page here.

What exactly IS 9 carat Gold?
Since pure ( fine) gold is too soft for most uses it is alloyed with other metals, usually silver and copper, to achieve a desired hardness and colour.
9 Carat Gold is an alloy of fine gold, fine silver and copper, and has the stamp of quality of 375. This means it has 9 parts pure gold out of 24 parts. Or 37.5%, which is where the metric stamp comes from - 375. Available in Yellow and Rose and White, the other metals are in a different quantity to give a range of the 3 colours, but there is still the same amount of pure gold in the mix.

So then What is Sterling Silver really?
Pure Silver is an element and is 100% pure silver, otherwise in jewellery terms known as "Fine Silver"
Again, this is lovely but too soft for the wear and tear expected from jewellery, and so a little bit of copper is added to make it harder. This addition is not enough to change the colour and brightness, but can account for some peoples sensitivity to wearing silver. The purity mark on your Sterling Silver will be the number 925. This means it is 92.5% Pure Silver, and the remaining 7.5% is pure copper. ALL sterling silver jewellery is required to have this mark, so if your other silver jewellery ( not from here) doesn't have it, then its likely to be plated. Beware of jewellery sold as "Silver" as it is also likely to be just cheap plated metal and not solid Sterling Silver.
